Starting a new army…

Yes, was apparently bored, and so I decided to take on yet another army… Looking for something that was NOT overpowered like all of my other armies… OK, except the Eldar I guess… So, a Dark Angels force, and I'm doing them as Consecrators (http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Consecrators) since I just happen to have a bunch of the old RT era stuff, and that's pretty much what they're known for. The old Legion color scheme, black armor with the red helmet stripe…

Anyway, an old buddy got wind of this and is shipping me a box of stuff… Because I apparently didn't have enough stuff, so the extra 30 or so Terminators will fit in nicely… So, the big box o' tanks, Termis and more troops should arrive next week, and I'll be sending him a crate o' ammo :-)

Started painting up some of what I have and have played a few games with the Deathwing stuff, seems OK, and it should be fun to play in the January/February league at the Armored Gopher (http://www.armored-gopher.com/)... Escalation league, and at 500 points I'm fielding a REALLY small army…

Sunday, November 28, 2010

Hmmm...  So, last week at 1850, so which army would be the most fun....  Ran my Eldar for the bulk of it, and they're fun and all, but not really competitive...  Played my Praetorians for a few weeks, and they are the other end of the spectrum...  WAY too powerful, even in the Light Infantry version I was playing...  Good dice, but it tore apart a pretty good Mech Eldar list and Chaos Marine list...  I'm just worried my Wolves and Fleshtearers will be even more powerful...

Maybe it's time to break out the Mech Fleshtearers list again and see just how annoying I can be with them...

Just a few random pics…

Just a few random pictures of some of the things I'm working on… And, yes it is really random :-)

First is the Furioso class DN for my Fleshtearers army:

That's the "Blood Talon" arms I threw together with old parts, resin and green stuff…

Longer term project here, my Airship for the Praetorian IG

Just getting a rough shape for the hull… Seem a decent size next to my Valkyrie/Vendetta, so I'll begin working on building up the deck and deck house for the next "beta" version of the hull…

Then a pic of a few of the lads in "almost finished" status…

Back to the Praetorians

Mkay, so it's time to get back to the Praetorians I think… I've been playing Eldar for much of the current League at the FLGS. Fun, but not at all competitive J Probably better that way, I won the last 2 leagues and placed or won the last few tournaments, so time for someone else I think. Would rather have a game to play than another win J

So, here's the list I'm trying:

Company Command:

    CPT (Power Weapon, Bolt Pistol)

    2 Snipers or GL's

    Las Cannon team

    Astropath

    Master of Ordinance

    Chimera (ML, HB, Stubber)

Techpriest Engineer

    Engineer (PW, Pistol, Servo arm)

    3 Servitors (Servo Arms)

Storm Troopers

    1 Melta, 1 Plasma, SGT

Platoon

    PCS (LT, 4 Flamers)

    3 Squads (1 Commisar w/ PW, 3 SGTs w/PW, 2 AC, 1 ML, 3 GL)

Heavy Weapon Squad

    3 ML Teams

Heavy Weapon Squad

    3 LC Teams

Veteran Squad

    3 Melta

    Chimera

Hydra (w/ Stubber)

Leman Russ (BC, LC)

Basilisk

Just have to decide whether to bring the Ogres or more Sentinels… Oh, and I need to get more pics of the works in progress up…

Let’s hunt Hordes with Praetorians

So, next week is the 1250 each team battle… So we will field 2500 points/side… Should be interesting at least. One possibility is facing a "Green Tide" Ork army teamed with an Eldar Jetbike based force. So, here's my "let's kill the horde" list, or at least the beginning of it… 1st Platoon's command squad rides in the Valkyrie most likely for the "let's drop 4 flamer templates here" combined with the 12" move every turn and shooting all of the weapons from the Valkyrie. Leman Russ set up to sit and shoot… A lot. The Hydra is more or less the same, 10 shots/turn, 4 TL Auto Cannons, all ignoring cover saves granted by things moving fast… Mostly it's just 10 shots for 85 points. Anyway, this is a start, I'll see if I can't get the lads lined up and get some pics online…

Next Week in the League

Mkay, so with the remaining teams being :

Mike and Son... Inquisition and DE's greatest hits... Crap tons of Dark Lances, Uber missile launching Predator hulls and lots of skimmers to get in the way... Honestly not sure what to do here. I have bunches of Sentinels (5), and 2 Leman Russ hulls so I could go Mech Guard with Command, 2 Vet squads in Chimeras, 2 squadrons of Scout Sentinels (multi laser or autocannon and HK missiles) to flank and hopefully get some side shots or just shots at the night shielded skimmers of doom. Or I can run BA, SW or Eldar... But I see us having to fight a reserve game against their gun line. With Wolves I have Scouts that can appear in their back line, BA have assault troops that hit from deep strike... Eldar, well I guess I can Pathfinder, War Walker and Spider up to see how many Str 6+ shots I can put on their stuff. I DO have a Fire Prism, but Wraithlords and Avatars would die quickly I think against them... Wolves might be the answer with a Land Raider loaded out with a Rune Priest and the 24" Enemy skimmers/jump troops/deep strikers treat all terrain as dangerous. Raider will draw a crapton of fire, but it might keep the other things alive. The Exorcists are not a real threat to the LR, and ramming the LR into their midst will deliver as assault group... 'course, I'm also tempted to do something silly like Eldar with Hawks to assault the DE Raiders

Tom/Joe: Tom's Marines and Joe's Chaos forces.... Well, a command squad kitted out with Plasma guns, Vets w/ Melta, Vendetta flanking and I can bring a Colossus (Str 6, AP 3 Ord blast, only fires indirect) to deal with the inevitable groups of Marines hiding in buildings for the 3+ cover save (Tom's Tech Marine). The Drop Pods with his Sternguard and DN's I think will lose out against the cheaper IG... Farseer w/ Mind War, doom or guide? I know that specific things dying would make a big difference, and blocking or making their Psych powers hurt themselves would rock...

Jamie/Ted: Tyranids and Orks? Or Marines with a heavy DN element... Jamie tends toward a horde of wee tiny peons and a group of really big nasties. So, likely my IG Mech force? Though my Wolves and BA have also done quite well against him. A horde of Orks? My wolves and BA have stood them up and beaten them in HtH... I'm fairly sure that an IG gunline would also do well there... Though the same could be said of an Eldar gunline with Farseer support to off the power claw guys and let the Wraithlord(s) just eat them a few at a time... 'course I could run an IG version of that with armored Sentinel(s)...

Mkay, so long rambling way of saying I can bring pretty much anything :-)

Mkay, back to building my army… Found some templates to build some "Space 1889" type Airships. Aphid class airship will be my first attempt as a Valkyrie or Vendetta class skimmer. I just cut out the main hull of the vehicle, and it will look like this… More or less :-)  This picture is from the "Space 1889" site:

So, much longer, not quite the wingspan of a "real" Valkyrie, but it fits the Praetorians a LOT better I think. I'm not doing it completely to the plans, not quite so long I think, but I'm hoping it looks decent when I'm done with it… So, I'll play the Praetorians as an Infantry company, with Mechanized and Air Assault elements. Sadly, I CAN field something like 9 of these Vendetta/Valkyrie airships (only difference really being the armament, the Vendetta is just 3 TL Las Cannons while the Valkyrie is more of a mix) in a legal IG force… I plan a squadron of 3 perhaps all told for my army, then to build some Chimera hulls for the various Armored "things" like Hydra squadrons, artillery and of course the actual Chimeras…

New League, starting over

We're running a team league at the Gopher and I'll be partnered up with one of the Eldar players, Dave Hahn. I'll probably at least start off running my Praetorians at the 500 point level and likely 750 as well. Since those levels are not requiring us to actually field a "legal" army (don't need to field the 1 HQ, 2 troops), I can pretty much tailor my list to cause the most damage in the shortest amount of time… Here's my "legal" list:

Company Command section (2 GL, Las Cannon, Master of Ordnance, Chimera) 160

Vet Squad (3 Melta, shotguns, Missile Launcher, Chimera) 165

Vet Squad (3 Melta, shotguns, Las Cannon, Chimera) 175

And here's my "It's my 500 point 'All Stars' list":

Company Command section (4 Melta, Chimera) 145

Hydra 75

Leman Russ Battle Tank 150

Vendetta ( 3 TL Las Cannons) or Valkyrie (rocket pods, multi laser) 130

The first has all BS 4, standard Mechanized list, not a lot of imagination or thought required. On the other hand, I'm not totally screwed if it comes up "Dawn of War" deployment like it did for me ALL last league, except that last game. I see them reserving a LOT and then just driving around shooting things up… Hull Heavy Flamers probably… With the second list I can't win any games with it, but I CAN throw a LOT of firepower down range… Will be counting on either wiping the other team off the field or Dave's Eldar holding objectives… Or I could field the Vendetta/Valkyrie and a bunch of Sentinels for an outflanking army…

Saturday, August 28, 2010

Well, on another note altogether… It appears as if I’ve actually stopped drinking again. I don’t think it was a conscious decision or anything at this point, I just pretty much stopped. I think it was because I could feel my self control slipping more and more as the stress level increased…  Kind of amusing watching “Being Human” or any Werewolf movie/show and identifying so well with the Werewolf. It’s really frightening living with the knowledge of just how much havoc and destruction (physical and emotional) you can cause if you slip even for an instant. Henry Rollins had a quote that went along the lines of “I look at my hands and see the scars. I cannot forget what I did to get them”… Not an exact quote, but I have his books on a shelf in the basement somewhere and not in a searchable electronic format… But I think he just says it a whole lot clearer than I ever could. As time passes, I can see some of the scars starkly against the tan of the normal skin, and every time I look at that hand I remember why it is scarred and why the knuckles are ever so slightly deformed from the breaks over the years… Some are not so obvious, bones that were broken and my knee that will likely never really recover to the level of the other one. Places I’ve been and things I’ve done. Lots of stress this year, it keeps pushing me closer and closer to the edge

Anyway, I’m working on changing jobs. I’ve been at the Math Department for 8 years now I guess… It’s become something of a dead end position over the last 5. There’s been two years of pay cuts, most of the rest static or “minimal raises”. Yes, it was a big raise coming over from GSLIS, and there was one year I got another big raise, but that was a while ago. So, I guess it’s time that I got back to a “Management” position. Done that a while ago, and I have to admit that I burned out in 1994 playing Army. The life or death decisions being made on the fly are a “bit” different than the fairly trivial ones I’d have to make in an IT department. So, in order to move up and more importantly preserve my sanity, I think it is time to move on and up. I am hoping to get moved over to Atlas, the College level IT department. At the very least I’ll not be on my own there, they have a fairly complete set of skills over there, and it will make the job a whole lot easier… Failing that, I guess it is time to start sending out the resume of doom…

Up to 1000 points...

Playing in a team league… Random partners, so not at all sure what will be fighting alongside my lads. So, I’ll be fielding 1000 points, and making sure I have a “complete” force that can stand on its own. In this “flight” we randomly roll for partners, etc., then we can pick our lists after opponents have been determined…

So, if I’m facing off against a Marine force:
CCS (Master of Ord, Las Cannon, 2 x Grenadiers in a Chimera)
2 x Vet Squads (Meltas, one LC one ML, Chimeras)
Leman Russ (LC in hull)
Colossus or Basilisk
Scout Sentinel (Missile Launcher)
Vendetta Gunship

Facing off against a horde force:
CCS (Master of Ord, Las Cannon, 2 x Grenadiers in a Chimera w/ stubber)
Vet Squad (Meltas, missile launcher, Chimera w/HS)
Infantry Platoon:
PCS (4 x flamers)
3 Squads (GL/AC, one Commissar to deploy as a big blob more likely than not)
Leman Russ (HHB)
Hydra (+ PHS)
Valkyrie (Rocket Pods, Heavy Bolters)

Monday, August 16, 2010

Ah, up to 750 points for the Team League tomorrow...  Looks like I'll be bringing out a (proxied) Colossus.  Seeing WAY too many things just hiding in cover all game, even Marines.  Thinking of one of my old DI's with the "No Problem...  No Problem what so ever"...  Mind SSG Berry was a REALLY big guy, so he could pull that off sounding like a pissed off Darth Vader :-)

Other units I'll be bringing will be the Command Squad all loaded out, a Platoon Command Squad (4 flame throwers), a Vet Squad with the standard loadout (Chimera, Demo upgrade, 2 Meltas) and the line Platoon with 2 squads w/ melta/heavy weapons.  A Commissar in the PCS and the Platoon to keep things going the "right" way...   A bit light on vehicles for me I think, but we'll see who I get paired with and if it works out...

Thursday, August 12, 2010

Just a quick shot of the "steampunk" Sentinel along with some of the lads in progress...  Second pic is the ancient "Death chicken" class Sentinel along with one of my Vets in progress...  Marine Scout shotgun, different color uniform for the squad to differentiate them from the Line Dogs :-)

Tuesday, August 3, 2010

Vets...

Well, finally building more of my Praetorian Imperial Guard… Working on a Veteran Squad, been fielding them with the Demolitions upgrade, Shotguns on the lads and a pair of Melta Guns… Dug out the ancient Praetorian Sentinel, but missing the driver… Will be scratch building it I guess. I’ll have to break out the camera and put up some WIP pictures, they’re coming along quite nicely though. Need to decide on a uniform color for the Vets…

The FLGS (The Armored Gopher, http://www.armored-gopher.com/) is starting up a teams format league. Should be interesting, not sure which army I’ll field, so it’ll probably be random…

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

So, I broke out the ancient Praetorian Imperial Guard army I’ve had for “a while”… I understand the lads have been out of production for a few years now, and fielding a Light Rifle Company of them is somewhat difficult these days. I’ll probably be filling in with some modern 28mm British figures: http://www.perry-miniatures.com/index2.html has a nice looking Highlander range from the Sudan Campaign, and http://www.wargamesfactory.com/wargames-factory-store/british-firing-line-zulu-war has some pretty nice looking Brits. The Martini-Henry is very different than the Lasgun of the GW guys, but it will look OK I think.

I Played them this week in the campaign against a Tyranid force with 9 Zoanthropes, 2 Tervigons, 2 Tyrannofex and a boatload of Termigants. I fielded a Company command squad with Master of the Ordanance, CPT, Bodyguard, Las Cannon, Medic, Standard and in Carapace Armor. Infantry Platoon, command section with Commissar, LT and 4 Grenade Launchers . 2 Line Squads with SGT (power swords), Grenade Launchers and Mortars. I made a “Blob” squad by combining them into one really big one. 2 Heavy Weapon squads with Missile Launchers and a Special Weapon squad with 3 more Grenade Launchers filled out the Platoon. The other Troop section was a Vet squad with Melta and Plasma guns mounted in a Chimers IFV. Also fielded a squad of Orgyn, squad of Ratlings, 2 Sentinels, 2 Leman Russ tanks (one normal, one Exterminator), and finally a Battery of Artillery with a Griffin and Basilisk. Lots of stuff… Won, but only because I got the one extra turn I needed and then time ran out. I am loving having so many things classed as “Troops” so scoring units are everywhere… Not liking the 3 BS, so only hitting 50% of the time for most units. Ogres and Sentinels worked out well, and the normal Russ was awesome. The Exterminator and the Griffin were both “eh” at best… Exterminator throws out 16 shots per turn, but BS 3 means that only half hit, and nothing to punch through heavier armor… So, it mowed some cheap troops on turn one, then only saw heavies from that point on… Jamie was quite smart avoiding it with vulnerable stuff, so it did very little overall… The Greif and Basilisk were a squadron, so they had to shoot at the same stuff… Not a good choice on my part.

Learning from that? Ratlings remain in the case, the Griffin gets modified into a Hydra AA tank, and the weapon mix gets changed. Vets get shotguns, GL’s go to Meltas for the Platoon based stuff… Probably go with another Platoon for bodies…

Tuesday, May 4, 2010

Aargh :-) Lost last night due to my skipping the bulk of a movement phase where I had an assault squad and DN all lined up to charge and tear apart the uber equipped Chapter Master and Honour Guard squad… Still nearly wiped him off the field, but ran out of time and the squads that stupidly stood still just died, giving away the kill points to lose me the game… Ah well, live and learn. Also, the last time I use the “deep strike” on the Land Raider. Would have been far better to simply roll it across the table I think. Thinking the Terminators are “powerful”, but the Death Company fit my play style a bit better, and I REALLY like the DC DN. It doesn’t always do much, but it IS scary and draws a lot of attention away from the important parts of my force…

I used the “Heavy Assault” force below… Still mostly testing. The “Mech” force it I think the most effective overall…

Mkay, so we’re up to 1500 finally… So, what I’d consider a “full” army at least. So, I’ll throw down some Mech and Drop lists and see who I draw as an opponent this week… The Mech 1250 list (modified some) won out against a Dark Eldar Mech list… Highlights being the Scout SGT taking down the big nasty Vecht (SP?) character’s Raider in close combat… That and the army actually working as intended…

Not sure which one I’ll use, but since I finished up the basics on my FT “Blood Talons” conversion for my ancient Death Company Dreadnaught, I’ll be more likely to use that one…  Magnets and green stuff to sculpt the arms, used parts from an ancient ICE Mech from the dead “Mechwarrior” game as the big saw blades…  It’s unique at least :-)

New Codex...

Mkay, headed into the New codex list...  First shot is 1000 points.  A bit tight to fit in all the elements that I'd like to...  So, here's a Drop list.  Plan is that the DN drops in due to the Drop pod rules (half drop in on turn one, rounding up and half of one is one :-)).  Now the Pod has a locator beacon on it.  The pod will drop right into the Enemy force and the DN comes out to play...  The obvious threat is the big nasty DN, but with the beacon there the rest of the force Deep Striking in does not deviate within 6" of the pod.  So, the rest of the force starts dropping in on turn 2...  Should be a quick and dirty one no matter what happens.  Oh, and a 10 man Scout squad and a Baal Predator (also a Scout)...

Mkay, The Blood Angels codex is coming out 3 April…  I have the bulk of it from various online sources, and will be picking up my pre-ordered copy on it’s release date.  Playing in an escalation league at the Gopher, and we’re just now at the 1000 point level.  So, this week I’ll field my last “PDF” list (the current codex is a free PDF/download)…  So, the last week of me fighting with one hand behind my back…  I’ll be fielding either a Mechanized list of a Drop list.

Mech list:

Captain, perhaps Tycho (100/110)

Death Company, 3 w/ Jump packs (15)

Assault Squad, 2 Plasma Pistols, SGT w/ Power Fist in Rhino (210)

Assault Squad, 2 Plasma Pistols, SGT PP/PW (200)

Tactical Squad, Multi Melta, Plasma Gun, Power Fist in Rhino (215)

Baal Predator, Twin Assault Cannon, Heavy Bolters (125)

Vindicator (125)

Drop list:

Chaplain, Jump pack (120)

Veteran Assault Squad, Melta, PF, 2 PW, Jump Pack (215)

Assault Squad, 2 Plasma, Power Weapon (185)

Assault Squad, 2 Plasma, Power Fist (195)

Death Company, 3, Jump packs (15)

Baal Predator, TLAC, Heavy Bolters (125)

Whirlwind (85)

Land Speeder, Multi Melta, Typhoon Launcher (75)

Yes, the Drop list is more my speed overall, depending on who I end up facing of course…  Dark Eldar with so many Lances would tear it apart I think, but most everything else…  The Baal and Rhinos are “fast” 50% of the time for this week.  All Rhino Hulls are Fast under the new codex, and REALLY looking forward to that.  They get all of the standard Marine Vet squad types like the Sternguard and Vanguard Vets…  I WILL field the Vanguard vets, with the new rules for only a 1d6 deviation on a deep strike, and the ability to assault right out of a deep strike?  Um, yes I think I will…  Moving from 2 “Troops” choices to 6, that should be great.  The Death Company is now not cheap, and Troops…  Though they cannot score or hold objectives, something about being insane and berserkers…  If I field 5, I can then field a Death Company Dreadnaught (DN) as a Troops selection. So, DNs as Troops…  3 different types of DN’s, the Elite ones being armor 13 to the front, mostly close in and can be a Librarian (Psyker) for an additional 50 points.  Death company being immune to stunning and being shaken (berserkers), faster (fleet) and with extra attacks…  The standard “normal” ones being Heavy Support. So, in 2 weeks when we hit the 1500 point level, I suspect I’ll field the Death Company DN in addition to the Furioso type one(s)…  It’ll be a fast, hard hitting list, the key command being “Go!” :-)  Like the Wolves, but I suspect the FT’s will have a much more difficult time actually holding the objectives if they fail to simply erase all of their opposition, so a win or die thing for them, not a stubborn “Hold until Relieved” my Grey Hunters are really good at…
